Intrigued you must be, hence read on to know the good and bad of today’s episode.
The Good
-Although homosexuality has been a much discussed topic in the recent times, we liked the fact that Aamir made an attempt to shed light on transgenders as well. Not just them, but the whole LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community was aptly brought into the much needed focus.
- It was sensible on Aamir’s part to put forth the topic through story telling. With Gazal Dhaliwal sharing her life story on how she had a sex change surgery upon believing that she was always meant to be a woman, one could empathize with her and understand her point of view. Others who joined her were Deepak Kashyap and Divya.
- Honest confessions always go down well with the viewers. Hence be it Deepak Kashyap or Divya talking about their sexuality, or Simran Sheikh talking about her experience on turning into a eunuch, the experiences shared by each of the guests kept the interest levels of the people intact.
- Personal experiences aside, a concept makes sense a whole lot more when put forth by professionals. Hence the episode saw a couple of psychologists and psychiatrists who spoke at length about the LGBT community and how the society is still regressive in accepting the same. The fact that homosexuals are made to undergo shock treatments in order to get rid of the “disease” was horrifying yet an important note which was highlighted well.
- Aamir took time out to have a small discussion with the audience in the middle of the episode where he asked them about their opinion on the LGBT community. It was a smart move to note whether changes in the mindsets of people actually do happen or it is merely a theory. Where some understood the same, others remained adamant on their viewpoint.
The Bad
-Like always, certain talks tend to get repetitive in the show. The idea of accepting one’s self is relevant and a crucial one, however we feel it was stretched a bit too much.
- Although the genre of Satyamev Jayate is serious and aims to tackle essential social issues, we feel humour could be blended in in certain sections of the episodes to stop it from becoming a drab. What the makers could do, is present memes or small plays relating to the issue, be it poverty, crime, corruption etc. Such a form of humour is mostly satirical and hence takes a dig at the system and not the victims of it. Do you agree peeps?
- Although today’s topic of the LGBT community was handled well, we feel one essential point which Aamir missed was highlighting the way media and the fraternity represents it. A big chunk of the thought process in today’s society is shaped by the media around. Hence Aamir could have talked about the representation of the LGBT community, an important point that one.
Verdict
Today’s episode was an engaging one no doubt but covering certain other aspects like the representation of the LGBT community in the media could have added much more to the plate. Nonetheless, it was a commendable attempt by Aamir! What say peeps?
